OCSO 2016 Youth Concerto Competition Winners
The 2016 OCSO youth concerto competition was held on October 8th at Syracuse Artist Pianos in East Syracuse. The judges selected two winners from this year’s applicants. Flutist Kevin Buff and violinist Daiwei Shen will be featured during the orchestra’s opening concert for the 2016-17 season at 4:00 PM on November 13th, at Atonement Lutheran Church, 116 West Glenn Avenue in Syracuse. Kevin is performing the Poem for flute and orchestra by Charles Griffes. Daiwei is performing the first movement of the violin concerto by Felix Mendelssohn.
Kevin Buff is a senior at West Genesee High School. He is a member of the Wind Ensemble, Symphony and the West Genesee Marching Band. He is also a member of the Syracuse Youth Orchestra and was chosen to perform in the NYSSMA High School All State concert for the second year in a row. Kevin studies flute and piccolo with Martha Grener. He is very excited and honored to be chosen for this opportunity to perform with the Onondaga Civic Symphony Orchestra.
Daiwei Shen was born in Guilin, China, and showed early promise with music, learning kindergarten songs at age 2 and toy piano at 3. He began violin at the age of 4. His family spent two years in Thailand before moving to the United States as refugees when he was 9. Daiwei began studying violin with Peter Rovit in 2011. He is currently a ninth grade student at Nottingham High School.
